A quiet thought from me to you…
I have learnt that accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord, Saviour and Friend doesn’t stop the devil from speaking- the devil suddenly becoming dumb is not part of the package. His silence is not guaranteed, however, my ears turning deaf to what he says is a sure thing.
…and God speaks too! He speaks truer words, words more powerful and life changing!
As you live your life, and with every step you take in your walk with God, the enemy will keep trying to fill your mind with doubts and will want you to question your identity in Christ. He will attempt to condemn you and unfailingly judge you with the added task of causing you to repeatedly question ‘Am I really who God says I am?’.
The annoying thing is that he is smart about it.
He doesn’t speak in a croaky, nasally, annoying, horrid voice that you want to get rid of or ignore, but instead, he comes with a voice similar to yours or one that is pleasing to hear or in the form of a thought. It’s masked in the form of doubt, fear, worry, anxiety and second-guessing oneself, however, the words uttered are of no good to us.
I say this because I have first handedly experienced how the lies of the devil can completely confuse and derail one from the freedom Christ gives. Giving him (the devil) a chance makes room for doubt and you find yourself repeatedly going back to God for reaffirmation about something He has already confirmed to you. In my case, it was fear and persistent tears. I knew I was loved, but the devil told me it couldn’t be- ‘how could God whom I have never seen, love and care for me when there were millions of people out there keeping Him busy, how can an ordinary person like me be filled with THE Holy Spirit and have power to do all things in Christ Jesus?- it doesn’t make sense’.
There are times I agree (when I let my guard down but I’m gradually overcoming this with God’s help). I welcome him, give him a seat, entertain him as the good host that I am, and we take out time to contemplate on how ‘not much sense this makes’.
Oh, what a mistake!
But now I know better and I desire to reach a place of maturity where God’s words are all I trust completely. Our God is merciful! He understands our weaknesses and continually helps us out. He doesn’t give up on us and slowly washes away the lies, filling us with His truth and resetting our thoughts. This is why it’s important to hold fast to God, to abide in Him. God’s words should be the only words we desire to hear because they are words of love, peace, progress, positive affirmations, words that prune us, discipline us and make us better.
The truth is, the devil never stops speaking. He doesn’t keep shut, but as Children of God, and co-heirs with Christ, we have power over the devil and the words he directs towards us, the words he intelligently twists to appear like the truth. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our minds become renewed as we learn and accept a new truth, the only truth that comes from God, concerning our lives and who we are.
Go back to God’s word, spend time unlearning all the lies and re-learn the truths God has given us in His word. And as you do so, keep in mind Hebrews 4:12; God’s word is alive and active!
